Brainspotting

"Healing is not by rote or ritual, it's by presence and attunement." David Grand

Brainspotting is body-brain based a therapeutic modality that helps individuals process trauma, emotional distress, and other psychological challenges. It was developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003 and is based on the idea that where you look can influence how you feel. In other words, specific eye positions can help access and release stored emotional or physical trauma in the brain.

The therapeutic process involves

  1. Eye Position and Brain Connection: Traumatic and stressful experiences become stored in the brain and body, often in a way that may not easily accessible through talk therapy alone. The technique suggests that eye positions ("brainspots") correlate with areas in the brain where these unresolved emotional memories are stored.

  2. Finding the Brainspot: During a session, I will help you find an eye position that seems to activate a particularly intense emotional or physical response. This involves gazing into a specific spot or following a pointer to guide you eyes in various directions until you find your brainspot.

  3. Processing Trauma: Once the brainspot is located, I encourage you to focus on that spot while simultaneously exploring the feelings or memories connected to the trauma. The theory behind Brainspotting is that focusing on these spots allows the brain to process unresolved trauma, often leading to emotional release, increased insight, and healing.

  4. Emotional and Physical Release: While you focus on the brainspot, you may experience shifts in emotion, physical sensations, or memories that help release blocked trauma. My clients consistently report a reduction in anxiety, stress, or the intensity of traumatic memories after using this technique.

Brainspotting helps process and resolve challenges related to

1.Trauma and PTSD: One of the most common uses is to treat trauma, including PTSD, where the traumatic memory or emotion may be "stuck" in the nervous system.

2. Anxiety and Depression: It can help with various mood disorders, including anxiety, depression, and phobias.

3. Performance Enhancement: Some people choose Brainspotting to help overcome performance challenges (e.g., musicians, athletes).

4. Addiction and Grief: It can also be used in treating addictions and emotional pain related to grief or loss.
